Early on, BMW tuning choices were limited. Owners were required to manually remove the car's ECU. Once secured, the pc will be cracked open and a brand new chip comprising revised parameters will be soldered in.

While still an undertaking best reserved for professionals, the full ECU unit could be removed and replaced. The old unit could be"flashed" with updated software. This was much more comprehensive and caused increased power gains and performance.
Unfortunately, there was still substantial downtime associated with software tuning. Owners were forced to send out their ECUs into an aftermarket BMW tuner and await its return, during which time their car would be inoperable.
